    Your initial session includes a comprehensive assessment, to develop an understanding of your issues, problems, expectations and goals. A comprehensive history is important in developing an understanding of symptoms and patterns of thinking and behaviour that have developed thoughout a persons life and life experiences.

    Psychotherapy assists in identifying negative thoughts, patterns, beliefs and behaviours, and assists with developing new adaptive helpful thoughts, behaviours that can lead improvements in emotional well-being and quailty of life. Therapy can also assist with developing helpful coping mechanisms to deal with worry, anxiety and stress.

    Negative Coping Mechanisms:

    While negative coping mechanisms may have a short term positive effect but will ultimately lead an increase in psychological problems and an increase in distress. Negative coping mechanisms may include medication abuse, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, over-eating, gambling, excessive spending, hostility, perfectionism, withdrawal from others, and avoidance. Psychotherapy can assist in identifying negative coping mechanisms and developing helpful positive coping mechanisms

    Positive Coping Mechanisms:

    Can help to reduce worry, anxiety and stress. Positive coping mechanisms include getting support from others, writing about problems, engaging in pleasant activities, hobbies and leisure activities, listeing to music, exercise, relaxation, mindfulness pratice and psychotherapy.
