Psychiatrists are medical doctors, they have a medical degree and have completed further qualifications to specialise in psychiatry. They provide medical treatment for mental health problems and they can prescribe medications.
Psychologists have a degree in psychology and are trained to treat mental health problems using therapy. Psychologists are trained in psychotherapy which focuses improving a persons wellbeing and quality of life through changing thoughts, behaviour and emotions. Psychologists use evidenced based therapies; therapies that have been shown through research to improve mental health problems.
A clinical psychologist has completed postgraduate qualifications, they have extensive training in the assessment and treatment of mental health problems. A clinical psychologist is trained to help with mild, severe, complex and chronic mental health problems. Specific criteria must be met to be endorsed as a clinical psychologist with The Psychology Board of Australia.
